Colorado’s Largest Retail Destination Opens Its Final Phase on Friday, October 20, 2006

Aurora, CO – October 10, 2006 – On Friday, Oct. 20, Colorado’s largest retail destination, Southlands, will open the final phase of development, Main Street along with more than 70 new shops and restaurants. The three-day celebration will mark the completion of nearly three years of construction and promises to be as unique as the development itself. All weekend long, shoppers can explore Main Street, visit the new retailers and restaurants and mingle with the entertainers including stilt walkers, jugglers, human statues, face painters, balloon artists and musical acts.

The entire community is invited to see two of Denver’s best local bands, Wendy Woo and Woo Crew and The Jakarta Band, will perform in the Plaza on Saturday evening beginning at 5 p.m. The evening will culminate in a grand fireworks display in the Plaza at 8 p.m. Sunday is Family Day at Southlands and kids will enjoy two live performances along with the chance to meet their favorite characters including Strawberry Shortcake, Spiderman and all their friends in the plaza beginning at 1 p.m. Also on Sunday, Southlands will celebrate the creation of its permanent art display that features hundreds of brightly colored tiles painted by area children and patients of The Children’s Hospital in a fundraising effort that raised $10,000 to benefit the Children’s Hospital Research Institute.

“After three years in the making, it’s very gratifying to be celebrating the grand opening of Main Street, which is truly the heart and soul of Southlands,” said Don Provost, principal, Alberta Development Partners. “We had a vision of creating a place where friends and families could gather for shopping, entertainment and events. With the completion of Main Street we have made that vision a reality.”

Spanning across 301 acres, Southlands, at 1.7 million square feet, is Colorado’s largest retail destination and features some of today’s most popular shopping attractions. Southlands is home to more than 100 retail, restaurant and entertainment options in a completely outdoor setting. Main Street at Southlands, the heart of this unique development, combines a classic movie theater, several locally owned and national retailers and restaurants and a number of unique retail boutiques. At the north end of Main Street is the one-acre Plaza that will be home to year round events and entertainment. In the summer, the Plaza will host a twice-weekly Farmer’s Market and the pop jet fountain will be activated, and in the winter, the Plaza will be home to Santa’s house, The Pond – the Southlands ice skating rink and a living Christmas tree that will be illuminated with a tree lighting ceremony each year to kick off the holiday season.

Highlighting the grand opening weekend’s various events:

• Live musical performances along Main Street and in the Plaza
• Live interactive entertainment including Las Vegas-style juggling, singing, dancing, fire dancing and the synchronized jump rope team – Skipits
• Human statues, balloon artists, face painters, stilt walkers and magicians
• Live music concert in The Plaza on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. with Wendy Woo & The Woo Crew and The Jakarta Band
• A grand fireworks display in the Plaza on Saturday, October 21 at 8 p.m.
• Live children’s shows and the chance to meet and greet Strawberry Shortcake and friends and several popular super heroes including Spider Man, Green Goblin, Storm and Hulk beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 22.
• The new Southlands gift card is available
• A grand opening gift with purchase program and many retailer promotions

The grand opening celebration will continue into the following weekend as Southlands hosts Spooktacular Saturday to benefit the YMCA of Metro Denver on Saturday, October 28. Enjoy these festivities for a $2 donation: hay maze, hay rides and a pumpkin patch. In addition, children under the age of 12 are invited to trick or treat at participating Southlands retailers. Southlands will also be home to a Parade of Pumpkins. Visitors can bring their decorated pumpkins to the Plaza for judging between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Judging will take place at 2:15 p.m. Every entry will receive a prize and a $50 Southlands Gift Card will be awarded for Scariest, Funniest and Most Creative and a $75 Southlands Gift Card for the Best Overall entry.
